supporting our umpires
Coaches and parents are asked to be supportive of our umpires at all times. Coaches are encouraged to thank the umpires after the game. Coaches and parents must not talk to our umpires at any point during the game, unless it is a positive comment. If there are any issues and concerns with our umpires please speak to our umpire mentor or use the MJHC feedback form.
Code of Behaviour Players
  • Play for the “fun of it” not just to please parents or coaches.
  • Play by the rules.
  • Never argue with an Umpiring decision.

Code of Behaviour Coaches
  • Be reasonable in your demands on young players’ time, energy and enthusiasm.
  • Teach your players to abide by the rules.
  • The “just average” players need and deserve equal time.
  • Remember that children play for fun and enjoyment and that winning is only part of their motivation.

MANAGER RESPONSIBILITIES
  • The Manager:
  • Have a list of Emergency Contact details for Players.
  • Contacts team with game times, club duty and all other relevant information
  • Help the coach to run weekly practices
  • Ring or text your phone list when practices or games are cancelled.
  • Keep a list of “Player of the Day” to ensure an even selection of players are receiving this award.
Advice to Coaches
  • Familiarise yourself with the MJHC Rules.
  • Ensure your team members have the correct, clean footwear and are wearing the appropriate safety gear (no mouth guard, no game) including shin guards prior to the game. Mouth guards and shoes will be checked by the Umpire prior to the game starting.
  • Ensure sticks are the appropriate size
  • Do not allow criticism or ridicule of other players, and explain your decisions wherever possible
oNe sided games
If the game is very one sided – we suggest more than a 5-point lead - it is suggested that at half time the 2 coaches get together. The following are suggestions only for balancing out a game. Please ensure that you inform the umpire of your decision.
  • Only non-scorers are allowed to score.
  • The not so strong team can add a player.
  • Restrict half the team to the ½ way line.
  • Put your best players in defence for the not so strong team.
  • Players must pass 5 times before they can score.
  • Once you have scored, you are not allowed to score again.
  • We do advise against taking your best player(s) off as we do not want to penalise them for being good.
  • Umpires can be harder on the high scoring team regarding feet/general rules that are often looked over to let the game flow (this should just be applied for the senior teams).
The emphasis during a game should be on fun and mass participation. Players should be rotated to gain equal experience in all playing positions.
player positions
It is suggested, but not mandatory that you consider the following team positions:
Senior hockey :2 forwards (strikers) , 3 halfbacks (midfielders), 2 fullback (sweeper)OR3 forwards (strikers), 2 halfbacks (midfielders), 2 fullbacks (sweepers)
Junior Hockey:3 forwards (strikers), 2 halfbacks (midfielders), 1 fullback (sweeper)
